The General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) is a subject-based academic qualification regulated by Ofqual and recognised across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Study online with learndirect, then sit your exams as a private candidate at an approved centre.
GCSEs sit at Level 2 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework. In England they are graded 9 to 1, with 9 the highest. Grade 4 is a standard pass (equivalent to the old grade C) and grade 5 is a strong pass.
There is no age limit for taking GCSEs. The qualification carries exactly the same recognition whether it is taken at 16 or 46, and your certificate never states how or where you studied.
GCSE English Language and Maths at grade 4 are baseline requirements for nursing, teaching, apprenticeships, the police, and most NHS roles, as well as almost every UK university. If you did not get the grade first time, you can resit as a private candidate.

GCSE questions, answered
Yes. What matters is the awarding organisation and the grade you achieve, not how or where you studied. When you sit your exam at an approved centre as a private candidate, the certificate is issued by the awarding organisation (such as AQA or Pearson Edexcel) in exactly the same way as a school-based GCSE. Universities and employers see the qualification and grade, and receive no information about your study method.
No formal entry requirements apply to most online GCSE courses. You do not need to hold previous GCSEs to enrol. Adults returning to Maths or English after a long break sometimes find a short refresher useful first, and your tutor will help you identify where to focus.
Most adult learners complete a single GCSE subject in 6 to 12 months, studying a few hours per week. Some finish in as little as 3 to 4 months, while others take longer. There is no fixed end date. You progress at your own pace, then book your exam when your tutor is confident you are ready.
You register as a private candidate at an approved exam centre, usually a school, college, or tutorial centre registered with the relevant awarding organisation. The JCQ publishes a searchable directory of UK centres that accept private candidates. You sit the exam under standard invigilated conditions, and we guide you through finding a suitable centre.
Grade 4 is the standard pass in the 9 to 1 system, broadly equivalent to the old grade C. It is the minimum benchmark accepted by most universities, colleges, and employers. Grade 5 is a strong pass, preferred by many sixth forms and competitive courses. For careers such as nursing, teaching, or the police, grade 4 in English and Maths is typically what you need, but always check the specific requirement.
Exam fees are set by the centre, not by us. As a rough guide, expect approximately 100 to 180 GBP per subject in entry fees, plus an administration charge that varies by centre. Some courses include exam entry in the fee and others list it separately, so always confirm the full cost before you enrol.
Yes. If you have already sat a GCSE and want a higher grade, you can resit at any point as a private candidate. Many adults resit Maths or English Language to meet a career or university requirement. For those two subjects there is a November series in addition to the main May/June sitting, giving you an extra opportunity each year.
In the overwhelming majority of cases, yes. Provided the qualification is awarded by an Ofqual-regulated organisation and the exams are sat at an approved UK centre, it is recognised by the NHS, universities, the Department for Education, and employers. A small number of highly specific courses may impose extra conditions, so always confirm with the institution or employer in question.
