Workplace Health and Safety
This programme is designed for people who wish to gain an understanding of principles and practice of health & safety in the workplace; and will be suited to anyone who needs to gain a practical understanding of their role and responsibility for health & safety. No prior knowledge is required.
The objectives of the course are to:
- Describe the legal framework within which workplace health & safety operates
- Explain control systems for ensuring health & safety is properly managed
- Analyse policy and practice in relation to workplace health
- Analyse policy & practice in relation to workplace safety
- Analyse policy & practice in relation to workplace welfare
Students may register at any time and have a full year to complete their studies.

The course is divided up into five units, as follows:
Unit 1 Introduction to Workplace Health and Safety
- Accidents in the workplace
- Why workplace health and safety is important
- The legal framework
- Enforcement
Unit 2 Workplace Health & Safety Management Systems
- Risk assessment
- Health and safety information instruction training and supervision
- Consulting with workers
- Appointed representatives
- Health and safety committees
- Health and safety policies
- Health and safety budgets
- RIDDOR
Unit 3 Workplace Health
- Comfortable working condition
- Smoking
- Alcohol drugs and substance abuse
- COSHH
- Manual handling
- First aid
- New and expectant mothers
- Young people
- People with disabilities
- Health surveillance
Unit 4 Workplace Safety
- Clean working conditions
- Suitable and safe working equipment
- Preventing slipping and tripping
- Transparent and translucent surfaces
- Windows, skylights, ventilators, doors and gates
- Safety of escalators and walkways
- Fire safety
- Electrical safety
- PPE
Unit 5 Workplace Welfare
- Legal requirements
- Toilets and washing facilities
- Drinking water
- Meal breaks
- Rest facilities
- Changing and storing clothing
- Working time
Entry Requirements
There is no experience or previous qualifications required for enrolment on this course. It is available to all students, of all academic backgrounds. Students may register at any time and have a full year to complete their studies.
