How does the course work?
On average learners will take between 3- 5 months to complete this course.
Modules
Unit One: Understand the importance of legislation and procedures (R/602/5210)
On completion of this unit you will:
- Understand legislation and codes of practice which impact on their role
- Understand how to deal with urgent situations
- Be able to record contacts, interactions, agreements, and provision of information
- Understand the actual or potential effect of own values, beliefs, attitudes and behaviours when working.
- Understand why the effectiveness of methods may vary depending upon the situation and clients involved
Unit Two: Establish communication with clients for advice and guidance (J/602/5138)
On completion of this unit you will:
- Understand the factors that contribute to effective communication with clients
- Be able to establish effective communication with clients
- Understand how to minimise difficulties when communicating with clients
- Be able to minimise difficulties in communication
Unit Three: Support clients to make use of the advice and guidance service (L/602/5139)
On completion of this unit you will:
- Be able to enable clients to decide whether to use the service
- Be able to identify and provide accurate information required by clients
- Understand the services provided by other suitable services
- Be able to provide information on other suitable services
- Be able to agree with clients their use of the service
Unit Four: Develop interactions with advice and guidance clients (F/602/5140)
On completion of this unit you will:
- Be able to enable clients to explore their issues
- Be able to sustain interactions with clients
- Be able to bring interactions to a close
Unit Five: Interact with clients using a range of media( J/602/5141)
On completion of this unit you will:
- Be able to establish interaction with clients using a range of media
- Be able to deal with problems maintaining interactions
- Be able to provide information and focus on the clients’ requirements
- Understand how to communicate using a range of media
- Be able to identify risks to the client
Unit Six: Assist advice and guidance clients to decide on a course of action (R/602/5143)
On completion of this unit you will:
- Be able to assist clients to clarify their requirements
- Be able to negotiate boundaries with clients
- Be able to assist clients to review and prioritise their decisions
- Be able to assist clients select a course of action
- Understand the importance of autonomy for the client
Unit Seven: Review own contribution to the service (Y/602/5192)
On completion of this unit you will:
- Be able to assist clients to clarify their requirements
- Be able to develop to achieve work objectives
Requirements
There is no previous experience or qualifications required to enrol on this course. It is available to all students who are at least 16 years old.
A work placement is also required to successfully complete your course. The placement will need to occur in a work setting, allowing you to demonstrate your skills in advice and guidance.
Assessment
Assessment for this course is online through our in-house Virtual Learning Environment. Learners are required to submit an assignment after each unit. Each end of unit assignment can be submitted online from the comfort of your own home. These assignments help learners build a portfolio of evidence that is automatically mapped to the aims of the course.
Qualifications
BIIAB

On successful completion of our BIIAB Level 3 NVQ Certificate in Advice and Guidance(RQF) course you will receive a qualification listed on the RQF at level 3 (Qualification Reference Number: (601/7407/9). This course has also been assigned 22 credits.
BIIAB, the British Institute of Innkeeping Awarding Body, is a government approved awarding body that has been raising standards in licenced retail since its formation in 1981. BIIAB are the premier awarding body for licenced retail in the UK and is owned by the registered charity BII. BIIAB offers a range of level 1-6 awards that cover the requirements of the licenced retail industry. They are perpetually developing their qualifications to reflect demands of society, Police, Government and licenced retailers.
