This iPET Network Level 2 Award in Responsible Dog Ownership covers everything you need to take into consideration when choosing the right dog for you and your family. Over 4 units, you will learn how to care for your dog throughout their lifetime and all the necessary routine health-care requirements to keep your pet dog healthy and happy. The qualification also covers your responsibilities as a dog owner under UK law.

This regulated qualification is perfect if you are preparing to choose a pet dog for the first time, or if you already own a dog and want to learn more about your responsibilities as a dog owner.

Unit 1: Choosing a Suitable Pet Dog

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Know and understand the UK Kennel Club groups and examples of the breeds found within them
  • Understand the range of factors that impact the choice of dog for an owner’s lifestyle
  • Understand common inherited health conditions and screening schemes that are run by the UK Kennel Club
  • Understand where dogs can be purchased from and how to select a suitable source
  • Understand the various activities which owners and their dogs may partake in

 

Unit 2: Dog Ownership and the Law

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand the principles of the Animal Welfare Act, 2006 and how it relates to responsible dog ownership
  • Know and understand the key pieces of relevant legislation that relate to dog ownership
  • Know and understand the process and legalities regarding dog identification and stray dogs
  • Understand how to safely transport dogs in road vehicles
  • Know and understand the Countryside Code in relation to dogs

 

Unit 3: Canine Preventative Health Care

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand the reasons for undertaking regular health checks and the signs of health/ill-health
  • Understand why weight management is important for the health and welfare of dogs
  • Understand day-to-day activities that are important for a dog’s health and welfare
  • Understand the diseases dogs are routinely vaccinated against
  • Know and understand the parasites that can affect dogs and why it is important to administer treatment on a regular basis
  • Understand the process of neutering and its risks and benefits
  • Understand the services that veterinary practices provide

 

Unit 4: Canine Life Stage Care

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand the terminology relevant to canine life stages
  • Know the information that must be obtained from the breeder/rescue organisation and what needs to be prepared for a dog in a new home
  • Understand basic dog behaviours and the importance of socialisation at each life stage
  • Understand the importance of providing dogs with appropriate exercise and enrichment at each life stage
  • Understand canine nutritional requirements during each life stage
  • Know the care required and common ailments of dogs during each life stage
  • Understand the requirement for euthanasia the process and options available

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification but learners must be aged 16 or over.

The qualification will be delivered online, and it is available to start at any time. Enrolment remains valid for 1 year and you can complete the qualification at your own pace.

To successfully gain the Level 2 Award in Responsible Dog Ownership, you must achieve 4 credits. You will be assessed through internal assessments conducted online at the end of each unit and assessed by one of our qualified tutors.

 

When are you assessed?
