About Your Qualification
This Level 3 Award Introduction to Dog Grooming qualification has been designed to give you an introduction to canine health, well-being and the art of grooming several types of dog breeds. It will also introduce you to the health and safety requirements of a dog grooming salon.
This Ofqual regulated qualification will be suitable for you if you’d like to learn how to maintain your own dog’s coat or if you already work in an animal care-related position or grooming salon and would like to promote canine health and well-being through grooming.
This qualification includes two days of practical training at top-of-the-range dog grooming salons and training academies. You can choose from:
- Weekday Placement – 2 days of practical training in Bedford
- Weekday Placement – 2 days of practical training in Moreton, Wirral
- Weekend Placement – 2 days of practical training in Derby
During your practical training, you will work alongside trained and highly experienced dog grooming professionals. This valuable, hands-on experience will allow you to enhance your skill set and develop your grooming techniques by practising on clients (dogs) in a safe dog grooming salon.
Your practical training days will include:
- Trimming coats using clippers and scissors
- Removing excess hair, mats, tangles, knots and ‘dead coat’
- Bathing and drying different dog breeds
- Nail trimming, ear and eye cleaning
- Maintaining dog comfort, health and welfare in the salon
- Health and welfare checks and escalation steps
- Maintaining dog grooming equipment and tools
On successful completion of the Level 3 Award Introduction to Dog Grooming, you may choose to progress onto the Level 3 Certificate in Dog Grooming or the Level 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming. Once you have completed your qualification, you’ll have the basic skills and experience to be able to apply for entry level dog grooming roles in the animal care sector.

Unit 1: Carry Out Basic Maintenance of Dogs’ Coats
On completion of this unit you will:
- Be able to confirm suitability of environment, equipment and tools prior to commencing grooming work
- Be able to remove excess hair from dog’s coat before bathing
- Be able to remove mats, tangles and knots, and dead coat prior to bathing and trimming (please note, learners on the Award qualification will not be cutting coats).
Unit 2: Promote and Maintain the Health and Well-Being of Animals
On completion of this unit you will:
- Be able to promote and maintain the health and welfare of animals
- Be able to work safely with animals
- Know how to promote and maintain the health and welfare of animals
Entry Requirements
Learners should be aged 16 or above, be working at Level 2 and be comfortable around dogs of all sizes, breeds and temperaments.

Average completion timeframe
You have 24 months to complete your course.
Assessment requirements
You will be assessed through a blend of internal written assessments at the end of each unit, along with practical assessments conducted on your placement, both assessed by our team of qualified animal assessors.
Placement or Practical required
This course includes 2 days of practical training in either Bedford, or Moreton, Wirral.
If placement or practical required, when?
Placement dates can be chosen to suit the learner.
Certification Timeframe
Learners can expect their certification within 6 months of completing the course, following the (EQA) External Quality Assurance of assessment.
Course Fees
All course fees, inclusive of all payment plans including our Premium Credit Limited option, must be settled before certification can be ordered.
