This qualification will provide you with the skills and methods needed to teach English as a foreign language to young people and adults.

Your role will be to help your students reach a competent level of spoken English, allowing them to effectively travel, study and work in English speaking countries.

This course will provide you with everything you need to know to deliver English lessons in an engaging way. Including how to plan lessons, create resources and create a positive environment in which you students can thrive.

You will learn how to give instruction, assess your students’ progress, provide constructive feedback and help them feel supported throughout their learning.

Upon completion of this level 5 certificate, you will have gained an internationally recognised, Ofqual accredited qualification in teaching English as a foreign language.

Once qualified you will be eligible to apply for roles teaching English as a foreign language.

  • Understand professional and personal responsibilities when working with learners

Unit 2: Lesson Planning and Resources in English Language Teaching and Learning

Upon completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand the structure and content of EFL lessons
  • Understand the principles of effective planning for different learners
  • Understand the use of course books in the EFL classroom
  • Understand the use of authentic materials in the EFL classroom
  • Understand the use of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) in TEFL

Unit 3: Teaching English Language: Vocabulary, Grammar and Pronunciation

Upon completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand lexical meaning, form and pronunciation
  • Understand the presentation of lexis
  • Understand how to support learners to remember and use lexis independently
  • Understand how to produce effective lesson plans for vocabulary-based lessons
  • Understand pronunciation including word and sentence stress
  • Understand phonology including sounds, connected speech and the use of the phonemic chart
  • Understand strategies and approaches to teaching pronunciation
  • Understand key grammar terminology, the form and function of grammatical structures and how sentences are structured
  • Understand the presentation of grammar
  • Understand how to support learners to remember and use grammar structures accurately
  • Understand how to produce effective lesson plans for grammar based lessons

Unit 4: Teaching the Four Skills: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing

Upon completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand practical approaches to teaching Speaking skills
  • Understand practical approaches to teaching Listening skills
  • Understand practical approaches to teaching Reading skills
  • Understand practical approaches to teaching Writing skills
  • Understand how to produce effective skills-based lesson plans

Requirements

This qualification is suitable for learners aged 18 and over, who are working or preparing to work, as teachers of English as a Foreign Language.

The Level 5 Certificate qualification may be undertaken as initial training for those whose current or desired job role requires them to develop skills, understanding, and knowledge of Teaching English as a Foreign Language, or as refresher training for more experienced practitioners.

 

There are other no formal entry requirements for this course; however, due to the nature of the qualification content, those undertaking the qualification must have a proficient level of spoken and written English.

We recommend that Candidates hold a formal English language qualification of at least Level 2, e.g.

  • GCSE English Language (A*- C / Grade 4 or above), or equivalent
  • ESOL International (CEFR: C1 or C2)

Assessment

This TEFL course consists of quizzes, videos and real-world classroom examples. Once you have completed the modules, you will be required to complete a final assessment to receive your qualification.
