You will develop a range of knowledge covering different aspects of canine nutrition, digestive anatomy, evolution, and commercial dog food.

You’ll gain essential knowledge regarding the nutrients essential to canine health, how food is digested and utilised in the canine, how nutritional needs change over the life of the canine, how the evolution of the dog can inform their nutritional requirements, the history of the pet food industry, the composition of the microbiome and how it influences behaviour, and understanding the purpose of research in canine nutrition.

This Ofqual Regulated Qualification is open to anyone age 18 or over who can show evidence and completion of a level 2 qualification or equivalent in Animal Care (or related) OR those who can demonstrate a minimum of 5 years of knowledge and experience within the canine care and welfare industry.

It has been designed according to the highest standards in canine education, providing learners with the essential knowledge they need to begin or continue work within the pet food, canine health, and welfare industries.

This course consists of 7 comprehensive units. 

Unit 1: Principles of Canine Nutrition

On completing this first unit, students will be able to:

  • Understand concepts of nutritional health and characteristics of both macronutrients and micronutrients
  • Differentiate between essential and non-essential nutrients
  • Discuss the role and function of relevant minerals and vitamins in canine health
  • Understand factors affecting intake, digestion, and absorption
  • Evaluate the dog’s dietary use of carbohydrates, proteins, fats and water

 

Unit 2: Canine Digestive Anatomy and Physiology

Upon completion of Unit 2, students will be able to:

  • Understand the main stages of food processing
  • Understand features of health conditions relating specifically to the digestive system in the dog
  • Describe the physiology of the canine digestive system

 

Unit 3: Life Stage Canine Nutrition

Upon completion of Unit 3, students will be able to:

  • Understand the nutritional requirements of a pregnant bitch and of a puppy
  • Know the purpose and use of a body condition score
  • Understand the role of nutrition and antioxidants for the ageing dog
  • Be able to identify factors that suggest a dietary change is warranted for an adult dog

 

Unit 4: Canine Evolution

Upon completion of Unit 4, students will be able to:

  • Understand the nutritional needs of the canine ancestors
  • Understand the domestication of the dog
  • Apply lessons learned from the evolution of the dog for optimal canine health

 

Unit 5: Pet Food

Upon completion of Unit 5, students will be able to:

  • Understand the history of the pet food industry
  • Understand how wet and dry dog food is processed
  • Understand the benefits and pitfalls of diets available to the dog
  • Know and understand the requirements of manufacturers guidelines and why they are important

 

Unit 6: Canine Microbiome, Immunity and Behaviour

Upon completion of Unit 6, students will be able to:

  • Understand factors affecting microbiome composition
  • Understand how the microbiome influences behaviour

 

Unit 7: Research in Canine Nutrition

Upon completion of Unit 6, students will be able to:

  • Understand the function of research in canine nutrition
  • Understand the ethical issues relating to research
  • Understand research methodologies relevant to canine nutrition
  • Be able to conduct a literature review
  • Be able to interpret research findings

Level 2 or Equivalent in Animal Care (or related) is required, or the ability to demonstrate a minimum of 5 years of knowledge and experience within canine care and welfare.

The minimum age for access to this qualification is 18 years.

This course will be delivered online, and it is available to start at any time. Enrolment remains valid for 2 years.

This course takes a total qualification time of around 380 hours which includes 75 Guided-Learning Hours. Students can complete this at their own pace.

You will be assessed through internal assessments conducted online at the end of each unit and assessed by one of our qualified animal tutors.

 

When are you assessed?

As you are in control of how you learn, you are also in charge of when you hand in your assignments. This enables you to take as long as you need to thoroughly understand the unit before completing any assignments.  

Once you have successfully completed all your assessments you will receive your final grade and receive your certificate of completion alongside your qualification.
