About your Course  

This iPET Network Level 3 Award in an Introduction to Dog Grooming will give you the beginners knowledge and skills to work in a professional dog grooming environment.

You will learn how to promote and maintain the health and welfare of the dogs in your care. This includes studying the health and safety requirements you will need to apply in a dog grooming setting.

You’ll study dog grooming's basic principles, including how to prepare, style, and finish different types of dog coats. The course will also cover how to safely handle different shapes and sizes of dog and safely bathe them.

This course includes 5 days of practical training, allowing you to work alongside professionals at a dog grooming school, gaining valuable practical experience. As part of the practical training, you will groom at least 3 dogs - with a minimum of 2 different breeds, covering 2 coats types.

Once you have completed your qualification, you’ll have the basic skills and experience to be able to apply for dog grooming roles in the animal sector.

Please note that as a COVID precaution, learners must have their own grooming equipment when attending the practical training. A comprehensive dog grooming kit is available to purchase from our practical training provider for the amount of £450. Alternatively, learners can provide their own equipment. If you decide to provide your own equipment, our training provider will need to approve your equipment list to ensure it is suitable before you attend the placement.

5 Day Practical Training

Your practical training will be held at the state-of-the-art COVID-secure dog grooming training school in Winsford, Northwich UK.

During your 5-days of training, you will work alongside trained and highly experienced dog grooming professionals.

This unique hands-on experience will allow you to enhance your skillset and develop your grooming and styling techniques by practising on clients (dogs) in a COVID-safe dog grooming salon.

Throughout your practical training, you will be supervised, supported, and assessed by experienced dog groomers.

At the end of your practical training, you will have the confidence and expert knowledge to be able to apply for roles in the dog grooming sector.

This course consists of 2 units. 

Unit 1: Health and Safety in a Dog Grooming Environment

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Learn how to promote and maintain the health and welfare of animals
  • Study the health and safety requirements inside a dog grooming salon
  • Learn how to perform risk assessments
  • Learn how to use, clean and care for grooming and cleaning equipment

Unit 2: Prepare, Style and Finish a range of Dog Breeds

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Learn how to effectively groom a variety of dog breeds, from preparation to styling and finishing
  • Study the techniques and equipment appropriate for the coat type
  • Discover the different handling techniques for various dog size and shapes
  • Learn how to safely bathe and dry a range of dogs
  • Learn how to groom at least 3 dogs across 2 different coat types

This course is open for all to study, providing that students are at least 16 years of age. No prior experience or qualifications are required. 

The qualification includes 5 days of practical training where you will receive hands-on experience and the opportunity to apply your learning. As part of the practical training, you will groom at least 3 dogs - with a minimum of 2 different breeds, covering 2 coats types. You will need to travel to our dog grooming centre located in Chesire.

The approximate time required to complete the course, including the practical is 55 hours.

Please note that as a COVID precaution, learners must have their own grooming equipment when attending the practical training. A comprehensive dog grooming kit is available to purchase from our practical training provider for the amount of £450. Alternatively, learners can provide their own equipment. If you decide to provide your own equipment, our training provider will need to approve your equipment list to ensure it is suitable before you attend the placement.

Each unit will encompass quizzes, essays, activities and research, along with other assessment methods. These are designed to ensure you understand the learning outcomes of each unit.

There is also 5 days of practical training included in this course where students will benefit from hands-on training and experience at a reputable dog grooming school.

Once you have successfully completed all your assessments and practical training in the dog grooming salon, you will receive your final grade and receive your certificate of completion alongside your qualification.

As you’re in control of how you learn, you’re also in charge of when you hand in your assignments. This enables you to take as long as you need to thoroughly understand the unit before completing any assignments.
