Studying your A-Level

A-Level and IA-Level Chemistry gives you the opportunity to build on your GCSE knowledge. The course is a big step up but you’re rewarded with rich and varied areas of study.

A-Level / IA-Level Chemistry allows you to study the very building blocks of life and how they interact with one another.

You will study atomic structure and bonding, the Periodic Table, alcohols, hydrocarbons, alkanes and chemical equilibrium, amongst others.

This course has been designed according to both AQA’s A Level syllabus and Pearson's iA level syllabus, so you will complete the course with strong chemistry knowledge. It means when you book your exams you can choose which specification to take. This will allow you to go on to study Chemistry or other Science-related degrees at university.

The units follow a logical structure with an introduction to Science.

You will then move on to study Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry and Organic Chemistry.

The modules are designed to help you familiarise yourself with essential concepts in Chemistry in an organised, step-by-step way. This is to ensure you will be fully prepared for studying chemistry at Level 4 or higher.

Getting Started

Our Chemistry course is completely online, which means you can enrol and access your course materials at any point.

Each module has an assignment to complete, which you can then upload on to your virtual learning platform. Your tutor will mark your work and provide you with the necessary feedback to help you progress on your course.

Chemistry can be challenging, so even though all your studies will be online, you should never feel alone studying with us. Your tutor is always available to answer your questions, address any challenges and offer you feedback whenever you need it.

You can get in touch at any point over phone, email or by messaging through the online platform.

Pursuing your career

An A-Level / IA-Level in Chemistry can allow you to go on to study Chemistry or related Sciences at university. However, your desired university will have entry requirements so be sure to check the grade required in this and associated subjects.

During your studies you will cover the following modules:

  • Introduction to Science
  • Physical Chemistry: Atomic Structure and Bonding
  • Physical Chemistry: Energetics, Kinetics and Equilibria
  • Physical Chemistry: Redox, Thermodynamics and the Rate Equation
  • Physical Cehmistry: Equilibria, Electrochemical Cells, Acids and Bases
  • Inorganic Chemistry: Periodicity and the Groups
  • Inorganic Chemistry: Period 3, Transition Metals and the Reaction of Ions
  • Organic Chemistry: Alkanes
  • Organic Chemistry: Alkenes, Alcohols, Analysis

Once assessed your tutor will return your work complete with its final grade and feedback. Once you’ve successfully passed each assignment you’ll be ready to take your exams.

If you decide to take the exams at the end of this course and pass, you will have gained either an A-Level or IA-Level in Chemistry. This will enable you to progress to further and higher education programmes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult individuals find Chemistry A-Level varies from student to student. Some find it challenging due to its complex concepts and the need for strong mathematical and analytical skills. However, those who enjoy chemistry often appreciate the intellectual stimulation it provides, the opportunity to explore the fundamental principles governing the composition, and behaviour of matter. The subject offers a unique blend of theory and practical application, allowing students to conduct experiments and witness the real-world implications of chemical principles. The satisfaction of uncovering the mysteries of the molecular world, solving problems, and understanding the intricate relationships between different elements and compounds can be highly rewarding for individuals with a genuine interest in the subject.
Yes, it does. While A-Level Chemistry may not require advanced mathematical skills, a solid foundation in basic algebra, arithmetic, and data analysis is essential. Mathematical concepts are integral to understanding various aspects of chemistry, such as stoichiometry, reaction kinetics, and thermodynamics. Students often use mathematical equations to calculate quantities of reactants and products, interpret experimental data, and solve problems related to chemical reactions. Therefore, a reasonable proficiency in mathematics is beneficial for success in A-Level Chemistry, and students should be prepared to apply mathematical principles to comprehend and solve chemical problems throughout the course.
A Chemistry A-Level is essential for most medical schools in the UK. Many explicitly require Chemistry A-Level, while some strongly recommend it alongside biology. A few may consider applicants without chemistry, usually if they have strong grades in biology and another science or math subject like physics or maths. Some universities may accept alternative qualifications like the Access to Higher Education Diploma, but you would need to check this before enrolling. If you’re looking for an alternative to A-Level Chemistry to study a medicine degree, you should check out our online Access to Higher Education Diploma (Science) - Medicine and Healthcare Professions Pathway.
A-Level Chemistry unlocks a host of possibilities for your future. It's your key to degrees in science and engineering fields like chemistry, chemical engineering, medicine, pharmacy, and even environmental science. These pathways lead to exciting careers as researchers, chemists, engineers, doctors, environmental consultants, and more. But even beyond the lab coat, the analytical and problem-solving skills you gain make you a valuable asset in diverse sectors like business, finance, and education.
No, the A-Level Chemistry exam is not included in this course package, but the course material prepares you to complete it. Should you decide to take the exams, you can choose between A-Level and the International A-Level.
