An AAT qualification is one of the most flexible ways into a finance career. It opens up different roles and salary levels at each stage, from entry positions at Level 2 through to assistant accountant and management roles at Level 4, plus a route to self-employment and a gateway to chartered qualifications. This guide sets out what you can do at each level, with UK salary figures from the AAT Salary Survey 2025 and other cited sources.

At AAT Level 2

Level 2 is the entry point and qualifies you for a range of junior finance roles. The AAT Salary Survey 2025 gives a median salary of 27,000 pounds for AAT Level 2 students. First Intuition's 2025 research notes that newly qualified AATs (27,903 pounds) earn about 11 percent more than graduates (25,195 pounds).

Roles at this level include accounts administrator, accounts assistant, finance assistant, payroll officer or trainee, sales ledger clerk, tax trainee and trainee bookkeeper.

The natural next step is to progress to the AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting, or the AAT Level 3 Certificate in Bookkeeping for a specialist bookkeeping focus.
