If you're looking for Functional Skills English past papers, you're getting ready to sit your exam, and that's the right time to practise. This page shows you where to find sample papers, how English is tested, and how to revise so your practice actually helps.
Where to find Functional Skills English past papers
Awarding organisations publish sample assessment materials and practice papers. TQUK, our awarding organisation, says sample assessments and practice papers are available through its website, and you can check the
TQUK knowledgebase for support materials.
Use papers from your own awarding organisation where you can. Functional Skills past papers English learners find elsewhere may follow a different format, so they won't match your exam exactly.
How is Functional Skills English tested?
Functional Skills English has three parts: reading, writing, and speaking, listening and communicating (SLC). Reading and writing are exams, so past papers apply to those two. SLC is an assessment rather than a written paper, so you prepare for it differently, and your tutor can help.
Each part is marked pass or fail, and you can resit a part on its own. Our guide to
pass marks and grades explains how marking works.
Functional Skills Level 2 reading past papers
Functional Skills Level 2 reading past papers help you practise reading under time pressure. Reading checks that you can understand texts and answer questions about them accurately.
When you practise:
- Read each text once for the main point before answering questions.
- Go back to the text to check your answers, instead of relying on memory.
- Time yourself, so you learn how long you can spend on each question.

Writing practice
Functional Skills English writing tasks ask you to write clearly for a purpose. When you practise, plan before you write, keep your sentences clear, and leave time to check your spelling and punctuation. If you can, ask someone to read your answer and tell you whether the message is clear.
Functional Skills English revision
Good Functional Skills English revision is regular and focused. TQUK sets 55 guided learning hours for each level of Functional Skills, so a steady plan works better than cramming.
- Do one Functional Skills English paper under timed conditions to find your starting point.
- Mark the Functional Skills English paper honestly, then list the skills that cost you marks.
- Practise those skills, then try another paper.
- Take a mock exam before your real one.
How to use Functional Skills English past papers
Functional Skills English past papers work best when you treat them like the real thing. English functional skills past papers are most useful if you set a timer, work in a quiet place and mark your answers afterwards. Functional Skills past papers English learners practise with should be timed too, because managing your time is a skill in itself.
Speaking, listening and communicating
SLC isn't a paper, so you prepare for it differently. Practise explaining your ideas clearly out loud, listen carefully to other people and respond to what they say. Ask your tutor how the assessment works, so there are no surprises on the day.
Why a mock exam helps more than papers alone
Practice papers show you what you got wrong, but not why. On our courses, you need 80% or more in your quizzes to reach a marked mock exam, and your tutor tells you what to work on. You can also add a mock exam or tutor time. See our
mock exams and extra support.
Ready for your exam?
If you've worked through Functional Skills English past papers and feel ready, you can book your exam on its own. Our
