About Your CPD Course

Fluoride varnish is a crucial protector against tooth decay, and it is regularly applied to adult and child patients in dental practices. It consists of a pale yellow gel that is applied to the teeth and sets quickly to form an extra layer of protection.

Alongside regular brushing, fluoride varnish helps to protect against decay, and by studying how to administer this professionally, you can expand your existing skillset while working as a dental nurse.

To maintain registration to the General Dental Council (GDC), you are required to complete at least 150 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) every five years. We provide verifiable CPD courses that satisfy this criteria.

The Fluoride Varnish Applications for Dental Nurses is a nationally recognised CPD course that provides you with practical and theoretical knowledge, as well as skills to apply topical fluoride safely and accurately.

Upon completion of this online course, you will show expert competence in the selection and dosage of topical fluoride to adult and child patients. Confidently, you will be able to demonstrate an understanding of dental disease, the principles of prevention, and the application of topical fluoride.

As well as satisfying your mandatory CPD obligations with this course, you can also enhance your skillset, giving you additional responsibilities, leading to career progression.

Frequently Asked Questions

The General Dental Council (GDC) state that Dental Nurses can apply fluoride varnish only when prescribed by a Dentist or dental health programme, and only if the Dental Nurse is suitably trained to do so.
The dental professionals who can apply fluoride varnish include Dentists, Dental Hygienists and Dental Therapists. Dental Nurses who have received sufficient fluoride application training can also apply fluoride varnish on patients with a prescription.
Fluoride varnish provides extra protection for teeth in that it helps prevent tooth decay and can stop existing decay from worsening. Research has shown that by having fluoride varnish applied, cavities can not only be reduced but the early stages of tooth decay can actually be repaired. This is why fluoride varnish application is beneficial for both adults and children.
The fluoride varnish application process is a quick and painless treatment. The patient will simply have a quick setting yellow gel-like substance painted onto the surface of their teeth. This process is ideally re-done every six months, however, this can be more frequent for children with a high risk of tooth decay.
Fluoride varnish application is used for the general prevention of decay and cavities. However, there are other dental-related conditions that can put people at a higher level of risk, so fluoride varnish is also used to tackle these conditions. These include: Gum recession and gum disease – Exposing more of the tooth to bacteria, Dry mouth – Less saliva leads to demineralisation as acids are less likely to be neutralised, History of tooth decay – Patients with one or more cavities a year, Frequent snackers – Those at more risk of decay because they regularly eat sugary foods between mealtimes, Deep fissures – Deep grooves and pits in teeth tend to lead to decay as food is more likely to become trapped
