Teaching English as a Second Language
About the Teaching English as a Second Language Certificate
English is the language of business, science, aviation and computers. It is the national language of 53 countries and the third most spoken language in the world. With these facts in mind, there is little wonder why so many people choose to learn English as a second language. In fact, fluency in English can open up a world of opportunities; from travel and friendship to education and employment. Given that so many people want to perfect their English language skills, there is resultantly a great need for qualified English language teachers.
This distance learning course has been designed to introduce aspiring language teachers to the world of teaching English as a foreign language. There is a great difference between speaking English and teaching it. In fact, teaching your own language often leads you to question it yourself. During the course of this qualification, students will discover the fundamental concepts of language and analyse the most effective ways to pass this knowledge on to their future students.
Who should study this course?
This course is perfect for those who are looking to begin a career in teaching English as a foreign language. Whether students plan to teach English in the UK, or to head overseas and teach from tropical destinations, this course will provide them with sufficient skills and knowledge and set them on the right path.
As with many of our qualifications here at learndirect, there are no prerequisites that students need to meet before they enrol on the course. All our learners will need is a way to access our e-learning materials and the motivation to study independently outside of a classroom setting.
What happens after the course?
On successful completion of this home study qualification, students should have gained an insight into how English is taught to speakers of other languages. They will now be able to use this knowledge to apply for their first teaching job, or as a basis for further study or research.
Students who want to teach in the UK will likely need a higher level qualification, and in some cases, they will need qualified teacher status. Those who choose to go abroad will have to check with the laws and regulations in their country of choice. Jobs which relate to this course include:
- EFL teacher (UK or Abroad)
- Teaching assistant (UK)
- Language assistant (Abroad)
