28th April 22

An announcement has been made by the UK government to boost the starting salary of newly qualified Teachers to £30,000, to make education roles more appealing to the masses.

This announcement comes as part of the ‘Opportunity for All’ Schools White Paper, which is the first of its kind in six years to be released by the Department of Education.

It’s no secret that the Teacher labour market in England is facing huge challenges in terms of employment and retention of quality teaching staff. The new graduate salary, to be implemented between 2023 and 2024, aims to tackle that by raising the salary by £4,286 from the current minimum of £25,714 per year.

Besides enticing and keeping great teaching professionals in the workforce, this pay increase is part of the government's overall scheme to ‘level up’ the education system.

Leora Cruddas CBE, Chief Executive of the Confederation of School Trusts, the sector body for academy trusts, said: “The evidence is clear that the quality of teaching is the single most important in-school factor in improving outcomes for pupils.”

Other aspects of this scheme, announced in Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi’s ‘Parent Pledge’, include:

  • Ofsted inspections completed by 2025
  • Uniform school hours
  • Access to funded training for a senior mental health lead
  • Targeted and tailored support for pupils struggling with English and Maths, and more
