Making Every Contact Count - Supporting Winter Warmth
Overview
This winter warmth course is for anyone who comes into contact with vulnerable people over the winter, and will provide an awareness of the dangers of cold weather and living in cold conditions; the importance of keeping warm and ultimately will help learners to feel confident in identifying individuals who are at risk during the winter. According to Age UK, each winter one person dies every seven minutes from living in cold conditions. Living in a cold home can harm your health. It can bring on or worsen a range of health conditions such as respiratory and cardiovascular disease, asthma attacks in children, and have a negative impact on mental well-being. This course is designed to give an overall awareness and understanding of the importance of keeping vulnerable people warm at winter.
Audience
This course is for anyone who comes into contact with people who are vulnerable to the cold and includes:
- All practitioners who come into contact with people
- Frontline health and social care staff
- Volunteers
- People with friends, relatives and neighbours who might be more at risk during the winter.
About this course
The training will ensure all practitioners, care professionals and volunteers understand the importance of keeping warm and how this can reduce winter deaths.

Objectives
In this course you will learn:
- The risk factors associated with cold weather
- Who is most likely to be affected by cold weather
- How to recognise when a person might be at risk from the cold
- Understand the responsibility to make a referral for help to keep warm
- Know how to make a referral
- After completing the course users will be able to understand why winter warmth is important and feel confident to have a discussion with patients and clients.
Content
Some topics covered:
The dangers of being cold; health problems in cold weather; dangerous temperatures; vulnerable groups; who might benefit from cold weather help; how to recognise when someone needs help; barriers to accessing help; what you should be asking; sources of information; making every contact count; how to make a referral; additional services and support.
