Overview

Functional skills are the basis for any future study, qualifications and work opportunities. As a recognised alternative to GCSE qualifications, this practical skills course was created to offer you the most convenient solution to learn and develop. Developed as a mix of our most popular functional skills courses, this package includes key concepts in both maths and English that you can explore at your own pace.

The Functional Skills Maths and English Level 2 online course includes everything you need to gain a C or a higher grade at GCSE level. However, this particular package takes it one step further with the added bonus of an online exam that you can take from the comfort of your own home.

This innovative solution has been developed thanks to our remote software technology that allows you to schedule and take your exam, without the added pressure of a classroom, or schedule constraints.

The course was designed as a combination of our popular supported packages in Functional Skills maths and English Level 2 which means you will benefit from 4 hours of one-to-one sessions with a dedicated tutor that will provide support and guidance.

To help you make the most out of this course, you will also have 2 mock exam papers that your tutor will check and offer feedback on, in order to prepare you for your Functional Skills Level 2 online exam.

The online exam is accredited by Open Awards, an Ofqual-approved award organisation and it can be used as a valid proof to continue your education, or to help you in your career progression.

Modules

Functional Skills English looks at the following modules

  • Reading – This module looks at reading for information, including looking at biased pieces of work and will help you to work out how much the opinions of certain authors can be trusted. It also looks at the different types of layout features and how these can impact the reader. All of the reading skills that you will look at will be tested in quizzes at the end of each section, ensuring that you are ready to sit your final exam.
  • Writing – This module looks at the best way to write certain pieces. This may include letters, newspaper articles, emails and blogs amongst others. This area will also test your spelling, punctuation and grammar skills, ensuring that you are ready to sit your final exam.
  • Speaking, Listening and Communication – The speaking, listening and communication (SLC) element of English functional skills is one of the most useful and fun areas to strengthen. This module helps you prepare for the SLC exam by showing you examples of the best ways to tackle everyday situations at home and in the workplace. These will help build your confidence and effectiveness in these scenarios as well making you exam ready.

  • Understanding measure, shape and space – This section contains a wide range of topics from area and distance to time, speed and temperature. You’ll look at how to solve problems involving time to plan your day-to-day or work life, and how to use your understanding of shape and area to do anything from read a map to plan a house renovation. Our quizzes will check that you’re able to use these skills in different situations.
  • Handling data – This section looks at working with information. You’ll look at how to summarise and present information that you’ve found, and how to understand information that other people are sharing with you. You’ll also look at probability and how likely certain things are to happen. You’ll learn how to spot patterns and see how even data and statistics can be biased.

Requirements

Great news! There are no entry requirements for the course. All you need is access to a computer or tablet and an internet connection.

Assessment

Once you’re ready to book your exam, please contact upskilluk@learndirect.com.

You will be assessed via an online remotely invigilated exam that you can take from the comfort of your own home.

Following your 1:1 tutorials you’ll gauge when you are nearly exam ready. At this time you can choose to do one marked mock for English and another for maths. Your tutor will mark each, give you detailed feedback and if appropriate highlight further areas for you to strengthen.

All instalment plans must be paid and up to date before an exam can be booked. In addition, exams cannot be booked for dates before the final payment is successfully made. For example, if two monthly payments are due in the future, an exam can be booked, but the exam date will be after the final payment is received.
