About your Course
Caring for canines in a kennel or day care setting is essential in maintaining the mental and physical health of the animal. As well as safeguarding the individual against accidental harm.
This course will provide you with the core skills you need to care for canines in a professional setting, including essential knowledge such as the responsibilities of the canine carer.
You will also learn how to identify canine behaviours, training techniques and how to spot behavioural or health issues to avoid distress or anxiety in the animals in your care.
This level 2 award in canine care and welfare can serve as your first step towards working in a kennel or canine day care service. It will also provide you with the fundamental knowledge to help you study at a higher level. Or focus your training towards kennel management or behavioural consulting.

This level 2 award consists of two units.
Unit 1: Introduction to Canine Behaviour and Training
Upon completion of this unit you will:
- Understand normal canine behaviour
- Know suitable routines to prevent welfare and behaviour issues
- Understand how to provide canine enrichment
- Understand appropriate canine training techniques
- Understand the use of force-free training equipment
Unit 2: Introduction to Canine Health
Upon completion of this unit you will:
- Know about specific dog breeds and reasons for selecting specific breeds
- Understand canine disease
- Understand common canine health disorders
- Know basic canine needs and carer responsibilities
- Understand the basics of human and canine relationships
Learners should be aged 16 or above and be working at Level 1 or above and be comfortable working with dogs of all breeds and sizes.
Total study time for this course is 56 hours.
