Overview
The Level 3 Award in Small Animal Care and Welfare is designed to combine your interest in animals with an understanding of animal health and welfare.
You’ll learn how to care for a range of small, domesticated animals such as dogs, cats, hamsters and more. This will include the fundamentals of treating wounds and injuries, identifying stings and insect bites and other problems.
Throughout the course, you’ll develop key skills to help identify animal behaviours and assess their needs. You will also learn about animal welfare legislation and codes of practice to ensure you deliver the best care.
The course allows you to understand the best practices for animal care, whether you want to start a career in animal care, or simply want to take better care of your pets
Once you have completed your qualification you’ll be able to apply for job roles within the animal care sector.

The course consists of 2 compulsory units.
Unit 1: Animal First Aid
On completion of this unit you will:
- Understand the requirements of animal first aid, who can administer first aid and why first aid is important
- Be able to dress and treat wounds
- Know how to give the necessary treatment to an animal that is choking
- Know how to treat an animal for stings and poisoning
- Understand the signs of hyperthermia and actions to take
Unit 2: Small Animal Welfare
On completion of this unit you will:
- Understand animal welfare concerning small animals
- Understand legislation and codes of practice related to animal welfare
- Know how to care for animals and deal with animal behaviour
- Know ways to monitor animal health in small animals
You’ll need a desire to learn and a passion for animal care and welfare. However, previous experience or qualifications aren’t necessary.
Although, you will need a stable internet connection and a laptop so you’re able to progress with your online course.
*You will have access to the course for 12 months only, after which, you can purchase extensions through your learning platform.

When studying your Level 3 Award in Small Animal Care and Welfare you’ll be assessed internally by our qualified experts. After each unit, you study there will be an assignment for you to complete.
Once you have successfully completed all your assessments you will receive your final grade and receive your certificate of completion alongside your qualification.
