Safeguarding and PREVENT

Last year saw a concerted effort across learndirect to improve and embed understanding of our safeguarding responsibilities – whether through workshops or development and use of tools/materials within centres or with learners.  This year we also made the Safeguarding e-learning course available to all delivery staff across the supply chain. This doesn’t conclude our work in this area – especially as new evidence and thinking is emerging all the time.

One such area is the government’s Prevent agenda and, as such, please look out for further updates on this, our responsibilities and what this means for our work, particularly with learners. As a reminder, Prevent relates to:

  • How we promote all forms of equality and foster greater understanding of and respect for people of all faiths (or those of no faith), races, genders, ages, disabilities and sexual orientations, and other groups with protected characteristics
  • How learners and staff are protected from harassment, bullying and discrimination, including those based with employers
  • How we prepare learners for successful life in modern Britain and promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different backgrounds, faiths and beliefs
  • Safeguarding practice, including the prevention of radicalisation of learners

These themes will be explored as and when we get a visit from Ofsted and this guidance provides further information about what the Ofsted inspectors are looking at in relation to the PREVENT agenda.
