About your Course  

The Open Awards Level 3 Certificate in Forest School Programme Leadership (RQF) is designed to teach you the skills to run an effective Forest School Programme for children in an outdoor setting. 

This course is designed for those who are interested in teaching, horticulture, and animal welfare. This qualification is suitable for learners aged 19+. However, the Forest School Association and Department for Education requires Forest School Leaders to be at least 21 years of age. 

The course covers five mandatory units, plus the gathering of practical evidence of skills learnt in a forest school setting.  

Once you have completed your qualification, you’ll have the skills and experience to explore Forest School Leader opportunities at schools, nurseries, and youth groups.

Unit 1: Forest School Programmes and the Woodland Environment 

On completion of this unit you will: 

  • Study the structures of woodlands, flora, and fauna. 
  • Understand the importance of identification for a Leader. 
  • Learn the importance of sustainable woodland techniques.  
  • Encourage students to get involved in woodland management. 

Unit 2: Delivery of a Forest School Programme 

On completion of this unit you will: 

  • Learn how to deliver, assess, and evaluate a Forest School Programme. 
  • Learn, observe, and assess the impact of a group of student’s behaviours. 
  • Practice and demonstrate flexible teaching methods to adapt to students’ individuals learning needs. 

Unit 3: Learning and Development at a Forest School Programme 

On completion of this unit you will: 

  • Discover the relevant theories of learning and development. 
  • Learn the importance of a Forrest School Programme and holistic development for children. 
  • Learn how to reflect on the student’s behaviour and training experience. 

 
Unit 4: Planning a Forest School Programme 
On completion of this unit you will: 

  • Study the principles of planning and development of a Forest School Learn about the history, ethos, ecological impact and relevancy of policies and procedures.  
  • Plan six Forest School programme sessions with a communication strategy. 
  • Provide evidence of adaptation to individuals and groups developmental needs. 

 
Unit 5: 
On completion of this unit you will: 

  • Facilitate a range of woodland skills appropriate to a Forest School programme.  
  • Learn how to use personal protective equipment (PPE) tools and woodland materials. 
  • Discover how to facilitate, manage, and cook on a campfire suitable for a Forest School programme. 

This qualification is suitable for learners aged 19+. However, the minimum age for Forest School Leaders is 21. This is a requirement set out by the Forest School Association and Department. 

When studying the Level 3 Certificate in Forest School Programme Leadership you will be asked to show your knowledge and provide evidence of your studies.  

Assessment will take the form of a range of in-depth theory assessments for each unit. Students must provide sufficient evidence that they have the required knowledge, skills and understanding of the assessment criteria. 

You will be assessed through written assessments. Learners will also need to provide practical evidence within a forest school setting and provide this evidence to a tutor for assessment. 

When are you assessed? 

As you’re in control of how you learn, you’re also in charge of when you hand in your assignments. This enables you to take as long as you need to thoroughly understand the unit before completing any assignments.
