About Your Course
Studying Chemistry can lead to many diverse and exciting careers, and if you are keen to embark on a career path in this subject, then you will need a range of qualifications. If you’re an international student or a UK-based learner looking to achieve a recognised A Level, then we have the solution.
iA Levels are recognised qualifications that were designed for students living overseas but are also available to students in the UK, and with learndirect you can study for one. We deliver the iA Level Chemistry course online, so you can study from the comfort of your own home.
The course is suited for any individual who wants to go on to study Chemistry or a related subject at university or embark on a career in the field of science, healthcare, or medicine. In truth, many careers request science-based qualifications, so you have a wide array of options.
During your studies, you will cover a wealth of topics, including structure and bonding, molar calculations, energetics, and equilibria. You will also explore group chemistry, organic chemistry, and you’ll gain a solid understanding of transition metals and associated experimental skills.
The online iA Level course in Chemistry is designed to get you comfortable with the various topics mentioned, and how they relate to each other. By developing your ability and understanding of scientific methods, you will be able to apply these skills to further study or the working world.
Getting Started
You will be given instant access to all of the course materials you need to achieve your iA Level qualification in Chemistry when you enrol. Everything you need will be available via our industry-leading learning platform.
By studying with learndirect, you will have the benefit of studying in your own time and in your own environment. This is because the iA Level Chemistry course is delivered entirely online, so you have full control over when and where you study.
This course is perfectly suited to students hoping to strengthen their academic portfolio and embark on a career related to the study of Chemistry.

Unit 1: Structure, Bonding and Introduction to Organic Chemistry
Upon completion of this unit, you will:
- Understand formulae, equations, and substance levels
- Know how to explain atomic structure and identify elements on the periodic table
- Have a solid understanding of bonding and structure
- Understand organic chemistry and alkanes
Unit 2: Energetics, Group Chemistry, Halogenoalkanes and Alcohols
Upon completion of this unit, you will:
- Understand energetics and intermolecular forces
- Be confident in discussing redox chemistry
- Understand kinetics and equilibria
- Understand alcohols, halogenoalkanes and spectra
Unit 3: Practical Skills in Chemistry I
Upon completion of this unit, you will:
- Understand experimental techniques through a range of practical experiments and investigations
- Be able to demonstrate experimental procedures and techniques
Unit 4: Rates, Equilibria and Further Organic Chemistry
Upon completion of this unit, you will:
- Understand kinetics
- Know how to identify entropy and energetics
- Understand chemical equilibria
- Understand acid-base equilibria
- Have a solid understanding of carbonyls, carboxylic acids and chirality
Unit 5: Transition Metals and Organic Nitrogen Chemistry
Upon completion of this unit, you will:
- Understand redox equilibria
- Understand transition metals and their chemistry
- Have a solid understanding of arenes and organic synthesis
- Be confident in identifying amines, amides, amino acids and proteins
Unit 6: Practical Skills in Chemistry II
Upon completion of this unit, you will:
- Understand how to test for anions and cations, gases and organic functional groups
- Be able to demonstrate experimental procedures and techniques
It is recommended that students have existing Level 2 qualifications, such as a GCSE in Chemistry or International GCSE (iGCSE) in Chemistry.
The course and assessment will be available in English only, so students must be able to read and write in English at Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

A Tutor Marked Assignment (TMA) has to be completed at the end of each unit and then submitted to your tutor. Once your tutor has assessed the assignment, it will be returned to you with feedback and a final grade. After passing each assignment successfully, you will be ready to take your exam.
*Please note, the exam is not included.
*You will have access to the course for 12 months only. You can purchase course extensions here.
Pearson Edexcel

If you decide to take the exam and pass it successfully, you will be awarded with an iA Level qualification in Chemistry, delivered by Pearson Edexcel, the UK’s largest awarding organisation.
Pearson Edexcel are the UK's largest awarding body and we are regulated by Ofqual (England), SQA Accreditation (Scotland), CCEA Accreditation (Northern Ireland) and Qualifications Wales (Wales). They offer academic and vocational qualifications that are globally recognised and benchmarked, with educational excellence rooted in names like Edexcel, BTEC, EDI and LCCI.

Once you have achieved your iA Level in Chemistry, you will have a range of options open to you. Your qualification to apply for entry-level jobs in various sectors, such as science, research, medical, and healthcare.
However, many roles have specific entry requirements, such as further qualifications, so please check these before pursuing the profession.
If you want to continue your academic journey, then you may want to consider the following next steps:
- Degree study – You could apply to study a degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Forensic Science or a related subject
- Vocational qualifications – You may want to pursue a BTEC Higher Nationals, or other higher education qualifications
- Training – Having an iA Level in Chemistry could enable you to undertake training programmes in your chosen career field
