Studying your GCSE

Embarking on the study of physics is to study the relation between the smallest grain of sand and the sun. It is the study of matter, motion, space and time.

It is the most fundamental of science disciplines and its main goal is to understand how the universe behaves. You will get to learn about the building blocks of everything.

Studying physics – either on its own or alongside the other core sciences – will help you start you on a path of understanding how the universe came to be. This vital foundational knowledge will help you go on to study physics at A-level (or equivalent) and beyond.

During your studies you will explore energy, the particle model of matter, atomic structure, forces and how they are all linked.

You will also get the opportunity to study space physics including the stability of orbital motion and red-shift.

Upon earning your GCSE in Physics, you will have a gained a comprehensive understanding of physics including key theories and principals. This will allow you to build on your knowledge through A-level or Access to Higher Education courses.

Getting Started

learndirect isn’t like traditional colleges. We are a leading distance learning institute, so that means all your entire course is online. No physical classrooms or evening classes cutting into family time.

You get to choose when you work, rather than following a restrictive timetable.

As soon as you enrol with us you can start your studies straight away. All the material for your course will be made instantly available to you via our online student portal. So not only can you decide when to study, but how quickly you cover the course material.

You will be assigned a tutor to support you throughout your physics GCSE. They will be available to provide guidance and answer questions. They will also provide detailed feedback on all your assignments so you can make continual improvements.

Pursuing your career

A GCSE in physics allows you to go on to study either at A-level, complete an RQF or an Access to HE Diploma. All of which can allow you to go on to study physics at degree level.

Modules

During your studies you will cover the following modules:

  • Introduction to Physics
  • Energy
  • Electricity
  • Particle model of matter
  • Atomic structure
  • Forces
  • Waves
  • Magnetism and electromagnetism
  • Space physics

Requirements

Great news! To start this course there are no pre-entry requirements. To start straightaway all you need is a computer, tablet or mobile device and an internet connection!

Assessment

At the end of each unit you will find an end of unit assignment. This is completed online and submitted to your tutor. Once assessed your tutor will return your work complete with its final grade and feedback. Once you’ve successfully passed each unit you’ll be ready to take your exam!
