Overview

Studying your GCSE

GCSE English Language is designed to develop and enhance your skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Whereas English literature is more concerned with the thematic content of texts and typically involves poetry and prose. English language is more scientific in nature and explores language in segments such as syntax, morphology and phonology.

The course will give you insights into how writers have viewpoints and perspectives on issues or themes. These can be surrounding the way we think or the way we live our lives.

You will build on these ideas, incorporating narrative and descriptive techniques in order to stretch you as a creative writer.

GCSE English Language allows you to progress onto further and higher education courses including A Level English and humanities subjects.

Our GCSE English Language course was written by qualified subject specialists who have years of experience in Further Education. You’ll start with a Diagnostic Assessment, to determine your current level of ability, including areas of strength and potential improvement. 

Our courses have been created to cater to all ways of learning. You will be able to find content that helps you to learn in the way that you find most comfortable.

Getting Started

Studying your GCSE with learndirect isn’t like with traditional colleges. As a leading distance learning institute, all your work is online. So, you never need to worry about making it to class.

Your classroom is wherever you feel your do your learning best. And class starts when it suits you, not when someone tells you to arrive.

This gives you the freedom to study your GCSE around you existing commitments. As opposed to sacrificing family time to complete your work.

Because the course is online, you can start right away via our online portal. This gives you the choice to decide not only when to study, but how quickly you want to complete the course. The only specific deadline to work towards is your exam – exam sittings are held once per year in May or June with a resist opportunity in November for those who have already taken these exams and want to improve their grade. 

You will also be provided with a tutor to support you throughout your English language GCSE. Your tutor will mark your assignments, providing guidance and feedback. They are also on hand to answer questions or clarify anything should you get stuck.

Pursuing your career

A GCSE in English language allows you to go on to study either at A-level, complete an RQF or an Access to HE Diploma. All of which can allow you to go on to study English or a social science at degree level.

 

Modules

GCSE English language covers the Pearson GCSE (9-1) English Language specification and includes:

  • Reading – This unit looks at understanding, evaluating and comparing different types of texts, including extracts from fictional and non-fictional novels by known authors. You’ll also learn about structures and features of texts that will help with your own writing. All of the reading skills that you will look at will be tested in quizzes at the end of each section, ensuring that you are ready to sit your final exam.
  • Writing – This unit looks at the best way to write different pieces of text. It covers grammar, punctuation and spelling, as well as vocabulary choices to enhance your writing and make it interesting for the reader. This includes many different types of texts, from letters and newspaper articles to narratives and descriptions. Great news! There are no entry requirements for the course. All you need is access to a computer or tablet and an internet connection.
