English Level 1 & Level 2 - Supported

Overview

To help you to develop the practical skills you need to use English in everyday life, Functional Skills English is ideal. Functional Skills teaches English using real-life situations in an online context you can access at anytime and anywhere you have internet connection.

When you reach Level 2, you’ll have the equivalent to a C or higher grade at GCSE, meaning that you can demonstrate your ability to understand and use everyday English at this level. Some universities will even accept a Functional Skills Level 2 qualification in place of a GCSE. This course will guide you through all of the skills you need to achieve at Level 1 and Level 2, and will prepare you for a Level 2 exam.

Our English course was written by qualified subject specialists who have years of experience in Further Education. Our courses have also been created to cater to all ways of learning. Whether you are a visual, auditory or kinaesthetic learner, you will be able to find content that helps you to learn in the way that you find most comfortable.

We know that everyone is individual, so our online level and skills checkers will develop a unique programme made just for you. This means that you’ll know your strengths and where you need to focus right from the start.

In addition to this you will also get access to email support with a named tutor to assist you when you get stuck. The tutor will help by showing you the best method to work out the question that you are struggling with. As part of this package you will also get two hour long tutorials that can be used at any time over the course of your qualification. These tutorials will be completed within a virtual classroom and gives you the opportunity to speak to a tutor for an hour about any problems that you are having, or some one-to-one teaching in an area you’re finding difficult. Finally, should you chose to take the exam we will give you a mock exam and provide feedback on where you need to complete further study, at both levels.

Modules

Functional Skills English includes sections on:

  • Reading – This module looks at different types of layout features and how these can impact the reader; reading for information, including looking at biased pieces of work that will help you to work out how much the opinions of certain authors can be trusted. All of the reading skills that you learn will be tested in quizzes at the end of each section, ensuring that you are ready to sit your final exam, should you chose to do so.
  • Writing – As well as covering the best way to write certain pieces of text, this module will also test and improve your spelling, punctuation and grammar skills, ensuring that you are ready to sit your final exam, should you chose to do so.
  • Speaking, Listening and Communication – An important element of the English programme is the speaking, listening and communication (SLC) module. This module will improve your verbal communication skills and help to prepare you for your own SLC exam by showing you the best ways to prepare and also giving you examples of the correct way to use various SLC skills on a daily basis.
