Eastbourne locals Diana Lelliott and Julie Dirico both won regional titles at the learndirect Inspiration Awards 2014. Diana won the inspiring learner award which celebrates learners who have overcome disabilities or difficult circumstances to succeed and Julie won the into work award which celebrates the unemployed who have gone onto get a sustainable job.
Inspired by reading their stories in the local media, Stephen requested a visit to the learndirect centre at Eastbourne Library to meet them.
After finding out more about the award winners’ stories he spent further time talking to other local learners in the centre to see how they were improving their lives through learning, as well as the staff helping them.
Stephen said: “It was a pleasure to meet Diana and Julie who won regional Inspiration Award titles earlier this year with learndirect. When I heard about their achievements I immediately asked to visit the centre and meet both women. Diana and Julie were able to study through learndirect, to secure qualifications and improve their employability skills.
“Diana was able to gain qualifications despite undergoing frequent operations to relieve pain, following an accident she had at a young age. Julie suffers with ME and continued to return to finish her course. I was delighted to hear that Julie is now working as a receptionist and continues to study and Diana volunteers at the local library. This would not have been possible without the wonderful support of learndirect in Eastbourne.”
Rebecca Beesley, Learning Services Manager at East Sussex Library and Information Service said: “We are extremely proud of the achievements of all our learners who complete learndirect courses. It has been inspiring to have Julie and Diana recognised though their awards and to be able to celebrate their journeys.”
Nominations are now open for the 2015 learndirect Inspiration Awards. To find out more information about the 2014 winners and make a nomination for this year visit www.learndirect.com/awards
