Retail jobs are as varied as the industry itself, so whatever your passion – from DIY to fashion - there’s a retail job to match. As a retail sales professional apprentice you could be assisting customers on the shop floor or alternatively you could work within a specialist department as a product expert, able to help customers with their specific queries. It is likely that you will offer personal assistance to customers on a one to one basis, advising and supporting them.

  • The UK’s retail workforce is young and the sector is a vibrant place to work, offering many opportunities for apprentices to progress early on in their careers. You could become a senior sales assistant, craft expert or style advisor. During your Apprenticeship you’ll develop skills that are valuable to employers across the sector.

    Your daily activities could include:

    • dealing with customer queries
    • advising and supporting customers in the use of web-based facilities
    • running the counter

    Our Retail Sales Professional Advanced Apprenticeship usually lasts 12-18 months. It’s made up of theory (knowledge) and practical skills to demonstrate your understanding and competence in the workplace.

    You’ll work at least 30 hours a week. The hours and days you work could depend on your employer. Shift work including evenings, weekends and public holidays is common in this industry.

    During an Apprenticeship you’ll be paid at least the current minimum wage rate for apprentices, but it could be more than that. After your Apprenticeship, if you’re employed as a senior sales assistant, your salary could be from £15,000 to £20,000 a year.

  • During the advanced Apprenticeship you'll complete the following qualifications:

    • Level 3 Diploma in Retail Skills (Sales Professional) and Level 3 Certificate in Retail Knowledge
    • Functional skills qualification in English, maths and/or IT (depending on your existing English, maths and ICT qualifications)
    • Personal learning and thinking skills (PLTS)
    • Employee rights and responsibilities

    Your diploma is built from a selection of mandatory and optional units. We'll help you put together the right combination to fit your job role and the way you want to develop your career.

    Mandatory unit:

    • Work effectively and support others

    Optional units: You’ll choose four to 10 units from the optional section. Popular choices include:

    • Deputise for the leader of a retail team
    • Demonstrate products to customers in a retail environment
    • Monitor and solve customer service problems

    Your certificate is also built from a selection of mandatory and optional units. We'll help you put together the right combination to fit your job role and the way you want to develop your career.

  • You'll need to have a Level 2 qualification such as GCSEs at grades A* to C, BTEC First Diploma, intermediate Apprenticeship or relevant work experience. Once you've attended an interview, we'll place you in an appropriate role if you're not already employed in a retail environment.
