  • Our Retail Management Advanced Apprenticeship usually lasts 12-18 months. During which you’ll complete both practical on-the-job-training to get real experience, and learning that develops your knowledge and understanding of your job.

    Your daily activities could include:

    • Managing small teams in medium to large stores
    • Managing small areas of the shop floor or stockroom in medium to large organisations
    • Managing a small team of individuals and the day-to-day operations of the store

    You’ll work at least 30 hours a week. The hours and days you work could depend on your employer. Shift work including evenings, weekends and public holidays is common in this industry.

    Once you’ve achieved your Apprenticeship, you could go on to complete further education and qualifications, such as a Higher Apprenticeship in Management. You could also complete Advanced Apprenticeships or qualifications in subjects related to retail management, like customer service or sales.

    After your Apprenticeship, you could also complete further training to progress your career to senior roles such as area manager or a wide range of other managerial roles within retail.

  • During the Advanced Apprenticeship you'll complete the following qualifications:

    • Level 3 Diploma in Retail Skills (Management) and Level 3 Certificate in Retail Knowledge
    • Functional Skills qualification in English and/or maths
    • Personal learning and thinking skills (PLTS)
    • Employee rights and responsibilities (ERR)

    Your diploma is built from a selection of mandatory and optional units. We’ll help you put together the right combination to fit your job role and the way you want to develop your career.

    Level 3 Diploma in Retail Skills
    Mandatory unit:
    • Work effectively and support others in a retail organisation

    Optional units: you’ll choose four to 10 units from the optional section. Popular choices include:
    • Contribute to the continuous improvement of retail operations within own area of responsibility
    • Produce staffing schedules to help a retail team to achieve its targets
    • Make effective decisions


    Level 3 Certificate in Retail Knowledge
    Mandatory units:
    • Understanding customer service in the retail sector
    • Understanding the management of risks to health and safety on the premises of a retail business
    • Understanding the retail selling process
    • Understanding the development of personal and team effectiveness in a retail business

    Optional units: you’ll choose two to three units from the following categories:
    • Grocery and newspaper
    • Fashion retail
    • Under age sales

    This is just a selection - there are further optional units and categories available.

  • You'll need to have a Level 2 qualification such as GCSEs at grades A* to C, BTEC First Diploma, intermediate Apprenticeship or relevant work experience. Once you've attended an interview, we'll place you in an appropriate role if you're not already employed in a retail environment.

    This Apprenticeship is available in England only.

  • During an Apprenticeship you’ll be paid at least the current minimum wage rate for apprentices, but it could be more than that.

    After your Apprenticeship, if you’re employed as a retail manager, your salary could be from £20,000 to £30,000 a year according to the National Career Service.
