Former IT manager starts boating career

A man who used to work as an IT manager for Nike UK has started a new career after taking training funded by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC).

Angus Cory, of East Boldon, was made redundant from his job at the sportswear company after 17 years, but has now started working with boats, the Shields Gazette reports.

Mr Cory, 51, took a course in marine surveying, which means he is now qualified to survey yachts and other small boats.

He decided he wanted to start a career with these vessels when he learnt to sail his friend's boat, telling the news source that he was "eager to start up a business in this industry and work for myself".

However, he admitted that he had "never done anything like this before" and so needed help in getting funding to pay for starting his firm.

Mr Cory took advantage of nextstep - a career service paid for with LSC money - and said this helped him to "overcome the challenges" he faced after losing his job.

Chris Roberts, regional director for the LSC, added that Mr Cory has been able to "realise his lifelong dream" thanks to his hard work.

Glenn Carthew also managed to change his career after being made redundant.

According to the Norwich Evening News, he is now working as a painter and decorator after losing his job as a delivery driver in Christmas 2008.

He said that even though being his own boss can be tough, running a business lets him choose when he has time off.
