“I was doing my A levels at sixth form but I wasn’t enjoying it. I found that I was just memorising information rather than truly learning it. I learn a lot better through doing rather than listening.
“I wanted an office job and was particularly interested in IT so I started to look at apprenticeships as I thought that would be the best way to get work experience. learndirect put me in touch with Smart Assessor, a company which builds e-portfolios for NVQ and BTec courses.
“I started on a business admin level 2 Apprenticeship but keen to get into management quickly worked my way up to IT level 3. I’ve found that this style of learning suits me as I learn on the job and someone observes me to see that I’m on the right track.
“I’ve developed a lot of new skills and my CV is filling up but one of the biggest benefits for me has been the personal development. I used to be quite shy but working here has brought me out of my shell. I put myself out there and have something to say. I’ve got really involved in the business and now believe that I have something to offer.
“When we left school a lot of my friends went on to get jobs in warehouses and feel trapped now in a dead end job. I tell them all the time to consider an Apprenticeship and realise their potential. I know that my Apprenticeship has set me up for a great future, I have a full CV, qualifications and the confidence to present myself well in interview.
