Being able to mould the standard and potential of a member of staff is key for Lawnswood Childcare in Shirley, which sets itself high standards. So Apprenticeships were the ideal option for the nursery.
Lawnswood Childcare has taken on six apprentices with learndirect and two of those are now full time members of staff.
Kate Nicholson, manager at Lawnswood Nursery explains:
“In business terms the key draw for us is the price. We can give jobs to two apprentices for the price of one member of staff. We can help them to learn good practice and ensure they understand our objectives from the outset. They are often fresh out of school which means they are open to learning our way of working.
“Before we took on apprentices we used staff from an agency which was costly and didn’t provide the consistent staffing we wanted for our children. By looking into Apprenticeships we overcame both of these issues and haven’t looked back.
“Like any recruitment campaign apprentices are only as good as the individual but learndirect vet them first and only send the best for interview. We can then select the person we feel is most appropriate so we stand a better chance of recruiting a competent and happy member of staff.
“This has been a good experience for us and we’ve had six apprentices from learndirect in total, two of whom are now full time members of staff.
“It’s important to acknowledge that in childcare a qualification alone doesn’t prove someone can do the job as it’s instinctive, but the NVQ is different as it shows they have proven those skills and that’s how they achieve the qualification.
“The learndirect Apprenticeships are a great option for us, it means our staff can earn as they learn and we can see them in the workspace before committing our budget. I’d highly recommend this option to other nurseries.”
